Jack’s Renewal Run
Register a domain. Renew it. Try to leave. Jack has to jump every trick in the registrar playbook to do it: pre-ticked add-ons, fake countdowns, renewal price hikes, auto-renew traps and a cancel flow with no way out.
YourRegistrar is made up, and so are its prices. The tricks are real. Runs entirely in your browser: nothing to install, no account, and your best score stays on this device.
How to play
There are three stages. In the first, Jack registers jackruns.com.au through YourRegistrar’s checkout. In the second, it’s a year later and he has to renew it. In the third, he’s had enough and wants his transfer code so he can leave.
Jump the traps on the ground and duck under the pop-ups in the air. Every trap Jack runs into goes on his bill, and three in one stage and he loses his chill (you can try that stage again). The hoops are optional: jumping through them is worth points, and you’ll find they’re all things real registrars make you do. The tall ones need a double jump.
At the end you get YourRegistrar’s invoice, itemised, next to what the same two years cost at Chill Domains.
The traps in the game, and what we do instead
Every obstacle is a dark pattern that domain customers run into for real. Each one matches a written promise on our How it works page.
Pre-ticked add-ons and cart sneaks
A “website builder”, “privacy upgrade” or “site insurance” already ticked at checkout, or quietly added to your cart.
At Chill: the checkout has the domain. That’s it.
Fake countdowns
“PRICE EXPIRES IN 4:59”, to rush you into a longer term than you came for.
At Chill: the price is the price. Take a week to think about it.
Intro prices and the “loyalty tax”
A cheap first year, then a renewal several times higher, and existing customers paying more than new ones.
At Chill: renewal is the same list price as the first year. A .com.au is $20 a year and renews at $20.
Auto-renew traps
Auto-renew switched on by default, for a multi-year term, with no warning before the charge.
At Chill: auto-renew is off by default and never pre-ticked. Turn it on and we email you the exact price at least 7 days before we charge.
Scare-emails and fake invoices
“FINAL NOTICE” in red, “domain protection” upsells, and lookalike “renewal invoices” from companies you’ve never dealt with. Here’s how to spot a fake renewal notice.
At Chill: plain-text reminders with the current price, and they stop as soon as you renew.
The roach motel
Easy to check in, hard to check out: cancelling by phone or form only, offers you didn’t ask for, “are you sure?” on repeat.
At Chill: turning auto-renew off is one click. Letting a domain go takes no action at all.
Exit fees and retention calls
A fee to transfer out, a “quick call first”, or a long wait for your transfer code.
At Chill: sign in and reveal your transfer code any time. No exit charge, no retention call.
Tracking pixels
Advertising pixels and remarketing that follow you around after you leave.
At Chill: no advertising pixels, no remarketing audiences, and we never sell your details. We use Google Analytics 4 for aggregate visit statistics.
